Have you ever read a book more than once and thought, “That’s not how I remembered it!”? Literature changes every time you read it because each time you open a book, you’re a different person. I first read Treasure Island when I was nine years old. If I were to read it now, the book would have an entirely different meaning. Literature is a two-way street.
Yesterday, I read the opening pages of The Norton Introduction to Literature, which said, “What we do with literature alters what it does to us.” I think that’s one of the reasons I love books so much. No matter how messed up, excited, depressed, overworked, animated, or exhausted I am, a book accepts me and helps me along the way.
Until tomorrow, read slowly – take notes – apply the ideas.
