The Freedom to Read

I’m overwhelmed when I stand in front of my bookshelf. Not because I don’t know what to read, but because I get to pick. I have the freedom to choose whatever book I want. I know that’s a small thing, but is it? Let’s discuss.

First, there’s the liberty and freedom our brave service men and women provide. They put their lives on the line to fight against tyranny, dictatorship, war crimes, and more. Without them, countless people would raid, plunder, and kill. They make it possible for us to have freedom, something many would like to take away.

Second, we no longer have to spend ten hours a day working farmland just to put dinner on the table. We’re living in a time when we have the luxury of reading rather than plowing in the hot sun.

Third, for centuries, religious oversight made it impossible to read. Books were labeled heretical, burned en masse, and people were punished for seeking them out.

Choosing what to read may be a small thing, but in reality, it’s a massive gift. I am free, and that should never be taken for granted.

Happy Independence Day, America.

Until tomorrow, read slowly – take notes – apply the ideas.
