Late-Night Reading

I’m not a late-night kind of guy. I’m usually in bed by 10:00, but that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy some late-night reading. There’s something very pleasurable about reading at the end of the day. All the work is done, the kids are asleep, and I’m usually craving some kind of adventure. So, let’s start there.

I like reading fiction at night. Don’t give me non-fiction, or I’ll start taking notes like a student. If that happens, my brain will ramp up instead of winding down, and I’ll never get to sleep.

Reading fiction at night allows me to feed my brain something other than hurry, hustle, and getting things done. It’s a chance to quiet the checklists and the catastrophes.

And then there’s reading at 2 AM. Sometimes, I lie in bed for hours, unable to sleep. Other times, I wake up in the wee hours of the morning and can’t turn my brain off. Instead of forcing myself to get sleepy, I love padding over to my reading chair, opening up Don Quixote, and traveling the dusty roads with the errant knight.

Until tomorrow, read slowly – take notes – apply the ideas.
