Restoring My Morning Reading Ritual

I’ve survived another long vacation and I’m mentally discombobulated. Yep, I’m using that word today. We went to New Orleans for a jazz crawl. I’m not sure if that’s what you call it, but “bar crawl” is a thing, so why not have a jazz crawl? You may not know this about me, but in my early years, I studied jazz guitar in college.

While on the crawl, we got to see some of the best jazz musicians in the world including Herlin Riley (my favorite jazz drummer) and The Hot 8 Brass Band. It was a great time, but once again, I was so busy keeping the family entertained and on schedule that my morning reading suffered. Hence, the discombobulation.

But I’m back! I’m in my chair, a hot cup of lightly-roasted coffee from Ethiopia steaming by my side, and a new book in my hand. Today, I start reading a poem by Walt Whitman with the book club that I host online. We’re reading Song of Myself. I’ve read the first few pages, and all I can tell you is this – having a morning reading routine solves a lot of mental challenges for me. It’s good to be back with my books and each one of you.

Until tomorrow, read slowly – take notes – apply the ideas.
