Are Book Readers Weird?

Yes, we are werd and we’re proud of it! The definition of weird is “Of strange or extraordinary character.” Given that the average adult can sustain optimal attention for an average of 67.01 seconds according to a study at The University of California, book readers are by definition – weird (Simon et al.).

We are able, through training, to maintain attention for much longer than 67.01 seconds. Some readers can focus for hours on end.

Here are some of my favorite synonymns for weird (if you’re interested):

  • Mysterious
  • Kooky
  • Peculiar
  • Supernatural
  • Outlandish

I think this list describes readers well. For people spending hours a day scrolling social platforms, the thought of sitting with a book for longer than 67.01 seconds must seem mysterious, kooky, and supernatural. And yes, the fact that you found this post on social is not lost on me. No judgement. I use social as well.

Here’s the good news. Attention and focus are earned. If you’re tired of feeling distracted, join me at the mental gym. Put down your phone and pick up a book. It may take a few weeks of daily reading for your brain to remember how to focus, but eventually you’ll be inducted into the weirdo club.

Until tomorrow, read slowly – take notes – apply the ideas.
