A man lecturing to young adults about books

Getting Lost in Books

Let’s go on a reading field trip. Our guide is Tom Lutz, an American author and the founder of The Los Angeles Review of Books, and he’ll be teaching us about The Cloud of Unknowing – a useful tool for discerning readers like yourself.

First, a disclaimer: The audio link (see below) from Tom can be found in an app called Waking Up. It’s a mindfulness app created by Sam Harris. This app does not sponsor me, nor am I advocating you purchase it.

A few key points from Lutz:

  1. There’s value in getting lost in books.
  2. Reading creates the pleasure of unknowing
  3. Not knowing creates a desire to know
  4. The more difficult the text, the more certain it is that we will be rewarded with our unknowing

What you’ll learn is that there’s a paradoxical nature to reading. “We read because we don’t know, and what we learn is that there is much more we don’t know than we had guessed”.

Until tomorrow, read slowly -take notes – apply the ideas.
