When I was a kid, going to the bookstore was always a treat, but it was different then. The book covers were not as pretty. Over the past few years, booksellers have learned that a gorgeous piece of art sells books, and I’m a sucker for it. Here are a few of my favorite book covers off my shelf. (See the picture attached).
What do you think?
Fortunately, every book in my picture has a great cover AND is a great story. Remember the phrase, “You can’t judge a book by its cover?” That used to mean that an ugly cover was no indication of a book’s quality. It’s the story or the information inside that matters.
Well, the pendulum has swung to the other side. Now, books are stunning but is that an indication of their quality? Let’s not forget that the best books achieve their status for what they say, not how beautiful they are. Is it possible that our TBR lists (To be read lists) are too large because we’ve bought too many pretty books?
No judgment here. When I walk into a bookstore now, I’m speechless from all the beautiful books. I’m not above the allure, only sounding the alarm that what’s on the inside counts most. Hmmm, that sounds like a metaphor for life, especially on a day like today when the presidential elections are in full swing. I don’t know about you, but I’m very excited for them to be over.
Until tomorrow, read slowly – take notes – apply the ideas.
