The Denial of Death by Earnest Becker

You’re building a pyramid. It might not look like the typical Egyptian structure looming in the desert, but it’s there. Your pyramid might be a business you’ve built, a child you’ve reared, or a charitable contribution you’ve made. Subconsciously, you’re working on something that will give your life meaning, and tell the world that you exist after you’ve gone.

That’s why the Pharaohs built pyramids. They needed a monument to say their lives mattered. What is your monument?

Tonight, we’re starting a new book in my book club. It’s called The Denial of Death by Earnest Becker, and it’s one of my favorite texts. Becker explores how our subconscious fear of death makes us build careers, climb Mount Everest, and search for the latest life hacks just so that we can get more done.

If you like psychology, this book will crack you wide open. It explores themes from Freud to Kierkegaard. Join us in tackling this book. It will be one of the most intellectually stimulating reads you’ve had in a long time.

Until next time, read slowly – take notes – apply the ideas.
