You’re Missing The Point of a Book

I worry that we’re missing the point of reading books. I’ll reel back my hyperbole a bit, but let’s consider what books are and WHY we read them. The why is critical here.

A book is input. It either entertains you or educates you. Either way, it’s more stuff that you’re packing into your brain. OK, that’s fine. But once you finish a book, what do you do with all that stuff??? If your natural tendency is to reach for the next book and begin reading (more input), you’ve missed the point of reading.

It’s what you do after the book that matters.

Input, by definition, is something added to a system that can then be used to make new and interesting OUTPUT. That’s where you come in. You have to gather what you’ve learned (through creating good notes) and do something with it. If you take all that lovely knowledge to your grave, what was the point of reading all those fascinating books?

Until tomorrow, read slowly – take notes – apply the ideas.
