I’m fascinated by people who become the best. I’ve secretly harbored a desired to be great at something, and I’ve struggled for two reasons. First, I’ve had too many interests which, as Ralph Waldo Emerson would say, have scattered my force. Second, once I do find something I love, I have poor practice habits. I show up for practice every day, but I do the things I’m good at and ignore my weaknesses.
My favorite quote from the book:
“The hallmark of purposeful or deliberate practice is that you try to do something you cannot do — that takes you out of your comfort zone — and that you practice it over and over again, focusing on exactly how you are doing it, when you are falling short, and how you can get better.”
That’s what this week’s book recommendation is all about – how to perform deliberate practice. If you’re interested in becoming better, it’s a book worth studying.
This is the book recommendation from my weekly newsletter on March 20, 2024.
