Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder

Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder

Since my message this week was on philosophy, Sophie’s World is the perfect book recommendation.

When I first started reading in this genre (Is philosophy a genre? Who knows anymore?), I would find myself standing in the philosophy section of a Barnes and Noble holding a book by Nietzsche or Heidegger while going cross-eyed. I wanted to chew on their ideas, but I couldn’t understand a word of their writing.

Sophie’s world covers many of the big ideas in philosophy in a fictional format. It’s from the perspective of a teenage girl who ponders some of life’s most challenging questions after receiving mysterious letters in the mail.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn some Plato or Descartes without getting stuck in the mud, then give Sophie’s World a chance. I think you’ll love it.
