  1. Today I read in the book, Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World, by cal Newport. This book was recommended by Eddy. In the reading I learned to think of digital distractions such as spending time on Facebook, X, Instagram, Buzzfeed and others as shallow vs deep work. Deep work makes a difference in whether we achieve our goals whereas shallow work does not. Shallow work at the office can be such things as email, texts, committee meetings, etc. I’m not sure what shallow work at home would be but I think it might be any behavior that takes away from a deep goal such as planning your finances or estate planning, etc. I learned that the digital distractions are designed to be addictive and to some extent we must accept them as a real part of our lives, but we have to learn to tame them (my word) or we end up wasting a large part of our limited time on earth. Excellent reading and learning today. I also want to read a book Newport referenced entitled, Willpower, by Roy Baumeister and John Tierney. The authors claim we have limited willpower and we can sort of run out after fighting distractions all day. Like a muscle that gets tired. I find that an interesting idea that I want to know more about.
I have way too many books on my TBR list and it’s starting to feel like a garden becoming over come with weeds. I need to do some trimming.
