I’m definitely more mindful of distractions and when I sit down to read, my phone is in the other room, the TV is off and it’s quiet so I can really focus. Being mindful is being present and focused and this is how I try to read. I do get monkey mind occasionally and use the feather to return my focus. I would put the book down if I were to get swept away with other thoughts. I’m still struggling with getting my reading done in the a.m. I get tired in the evening and then I get sleepy reading. It’s easy for me to get pulled away doing something else in the morning. The idea of self-reliance is still new to me and I need my time to practice it.
Instead of using the timer on my phone I purchased a simple battery run 1 hour timer that can be set anywhere from 1 minute to 60 minutes. This has helped me focus and relax around keeping time. My favorite topic this week has been how to be supportive of others who are struggling without my being enabling or controlling. The author gave specific behaviors for the reader, which I’d never seen presented the way she did. Because this was a new dimension of thinking about helping behaviors I was easily focused on reading and capturing the ideas in my notes. A growth topic.
